About Me
I'm a London based Primary teacher from Switzerland but have been living in the UK since 2016, originally to go back to Uni for a postgrad degree in Children's Literature in Glasgow.
I love reading and learning (as you might guess from my choice of profession ;-)) and really enjoy sharing and passing on a general curiosity about the world with the children I look after. Foreign languages, traveling and photography are particular interests of mine.
I'm also happiest when playing music and singing together with others (eg. choirs), which I've been doing for half a lifetime now!
My Experience
I take a keen interest in holistic, alternative pedagogies and take much inspiration in particular from the work of Maria Montessori, most recently I have also started educating myself further on child-led approaches, empathic/non-violent communication and a focus on intrinsic motivation (rather than external rewards) as I strongly believe in their importance for a child's wellbeing and social/emotional development.
"Play is a child's work" is a Maxim that certainly resonates with me!
EXPERIENCE IN AGE RANGE:
9 months - 10 years
I started babysitting in my hometown when I was fourteen, looking after a 1 year old boy in the evenings. This ultimately led me to do an Au-Pair year in Scotland, where I stayed with a wonderful host family and helped look after an 2 1/2 year old & 9 month old baby. I spent the days helping to:
- wake & dress them
- playing, planning outings and taking both children to the local park, play groups etc.
- bathing / evening routine including occasional overnight sole charge due to family's work shifts.
(Yes that means I got up at 2a.m to provide comfort from unsettling dreams ... ;-) )
During my Master's degree and beyond I worked as a daytime Nanny for several families in Glasgow and London, looking after children between the ages of 1y. - 6y.
Before embarking on my postgraduate degree, I worked as a class teacher in a Primary school back home in Switzerland.
