My Experience
My childcare experience initially started at a local Nursery where I would also work longer days during the holiday period. I had consistent training here to improve my childcare skills with help from qualified room leaders. We would change our teaching methods weekly through educational activities such as playing puzzles, showing sensory books and imaginative play. We would create a strong routine for the children, having a daily plan set out for their development to help strengthen independent play.
From there I continued working in childcare at an After School kids club which meant I looked after 5-11 year olds. The club was very popular with the children and the older children would return to visit once they started secondary school to help volunteer their time. We created a friendly and creative environment for the children including activities such as outdoor play, cooking classes, and one-on-one homework support in Maths, English and Science. I would work collaboratively with colleagues to prepare daily activities.
Between these two jobs, I would have regular work babysitting and eventually nannying between many families. Helping prepare the children's breakfasts and lunches, co-ordinating daily tasks that would involve homework alongside educational activities and extra curricular clubs. Outdoor time has always played a vital role in all the previous childcare roles I've taken on. This development allows for children to be aware of their environment, learn to protect it, improve mindfulness/stillness and further promote exploration.
