My Summary
About Me
Hello, I'm a registered Nanny/Childminder, I have recently started a new ‘home’ nanny service
where your children can receive care in their own home.
I am profoundly deaf and use a cochlear implant to aid my hearing, alongside lip-reading.
Please don’t let any of that put you off!
The only difference when talking to me is that you must face me as we talk.
I am extremely proud of my ability to communicate in different ways, just as much as I am proud to have been raised in Bristol.
I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, especially eating out and travelling.
Please feel free to contact me anytime where I’ll be happy to discuss options with you!
My Experience
As a current Early Years Assistant in Nursery part time, I am actively and passionately
involved with the everyday activities, meal times and personal care of the
children. I particularly love working within a small team and building close
relationships with colleagues and children. One advantage of working within a
small team is my ability to communicate effectively with others. As a deaf
person, I am able to lip-read and speak well, however being in a smaller team
only makes this easier. I currently have Access to Work government funding for
access, which allows me to bring in a British Sign Language Interpreter for staff
meetings, inset days, etc. Planning sessions occur once a week, which is a
great time for our team to discuss our observations regarding each child or the
group as a whole. We discuss their interests and schemas and create a plan to
encourage their interests and further develop their skills. We put particular focus
on the enjoyment of the children's experience at Nursery and provide
a wide range of options for the children including outdoor and indoor play.
Before starting at nursery, I cared for my cousin who has cerebral palsy. I
encouraged her to be independent (socialising and going out for meals etc.) and
build up her physical strength through physiotherapy. I believe this gave me
insight into the importance of enabling and empowering individuals to become
independent. Therefore, I believe an empowered child will be a successful child.
Since commencing my work was at nursery , I have learnt so much and
developed my practice including achieving my level 2 NVQ. I am particularly
proud of completing my qualification during the time that I have been here,
which has been shorter than those who are still working towards their
qualification. I am keen to continue my development in the work I enjoy most –
with the children. I am also keen to continue my qualifications and would like to
move onto completing my level 3. I have since applied for the level 3 course and
am hoping to enrol asap.
I believe I have benefited the children in the centre I currently work. As a proud,
Deaf, I believe I am not only a role model to those who identify with my
religion or Deaf identity, but to children from various cultures and backgrounds
and I am proud to stand in a team of diverse practitioners. I strongly believe that
we all should celebrate culture and diversity, particularly at a young age. Being
Deaf, I believe that I bring a new perspective on communication. I can easily
read body language and facial expression, which I imagine does help to lessen
the frustration in children who have not yet developed speech. During my time at
nursery , seeing the children grow and develop has only strengthened my desire
to work within Early Years, and I hope to continue to develop my skills and
experience.
