About Me

Hello, my name is Joana, I'm 25 years old and I'm Portuguese. All of my family is Portuguese, I was born and raised in Portugal. I moved to England one year ago to study musical theatre in London, which was a dream I had for a long time. I am an actress and I have done several acting jobs in Portugal, mainly musicals and many of them for children, like Beauty and the Beast, Pinocchio, Madagascar, Cinderella, etc. I am very passionate about what I do, I dream big and I always go after my dreams, but I also have my feet firmly on the ground, I am very responsible and hard-working. I am very lucky with my family who has always supported me, they soon realized that I would be a performer because as a child I liked to put on small shows to present to my family and friends, I loved to dress up as a princess, a fairy, an Indian, many characters. I always loved Disney films and I loved to pretend I was a princess and sing songs and dance. My family always encouraged me to follow this field. So from a young age, I started to study theatre, music, and dance. I have always been very creative and everything that was arts-related I loved, I always loved drawing and painting and handicrafts. I also love reading and writing and I have always been a good student, I spent a lot of time with my grandmother who was a teacher. My father is a swimming teacher so from a very young age I also started swimming lessons and I love swimming. My mother is a nurse so I also have basic knowledge of health and first aid. My parents had me very young so I am the eldest sister and eldest cousin, I have 7 cousins from 6 months to 13 years old, as I am the eldest I gained experience and a vocation for taking care of children, I love being with my cousins and doing different activities with them, my uncles always ask me for help when they don't have anyone to leave my cousins with and I am very happy to do it. I am very used to looking after children of all ages from an early age.

My Experience

I worked as a teacher in a school where I taught musical theatre classes to children from the age of 3 years old to 14 years old.
I have also worked as an entertainer at birthday parties and children's events. In some of them, I had to sing some songs dressed as a princess or some Disney character or other, and dance with them. I had to look after the children, entertain them, and do activities with them, face painting, and other fun games.
As an actress, I have also done some shows for kids such as Beauty and the Beast, Pinocchio, Cinderella, Madagascar, etc. In which I interacted with children, especially at the end of the shows there was always room for them to meet the characters, ask questions and take pictures. It was very funny to hear their questions and reactions, and I always had to keep in character.
And lastly, and most important to me, I have seven cousins, and I am the eldest. The youngest are twins and just turned 6 months old, and the eldest just turned 13 years old. Since they were born I have always had a very close relationship with them. My uncles often ask me to look after them when they need someone to leave them with, and even when they don't, my cousins ask to stay with me. We have a great time together and there is nothing that makes me happier than being with them and accompanying them and contributing to their growth. I am used to dealing with children in different situations and I have experience with children of different ages.

My Qualifications

My professional and higher education is as an actress, and I recently took an online childcare course.
As I grew older I gained more and more experience with my brother, cousins, family, and friends. I have always been surrounded by children in my personal and professional life.

I am a very calm and patient person, very kind and loving, who likes and appreciates affection, kind gestures, and kind words. Since I was a child I like to write letters to my parents and my family and friends, saying how much I love them and how grateful I am to them for everything they do for me from the smallest to the biggest gestures. I think that when we like someone, we appreciate that person and their gestures towards us, that has to be said and demonstrated, I think that's very important and I like to encourage this in children, to know, say and demonstrate when they are grateful. As I am a very calm person, I think this shows through to people and especially children, and ends up influencing a calm and peaceful atmosphere.
Other than being calm and loving, I have always been very connected to arts, I have always loved drawing, painting, making dolls with plasticine, and everything that was craftworks that appealed to creativity and imagination. I like to encourage children to do activities like these where they give free rein to their imagination, using different materials and colors, where they have access to various materials that they can touch, feel, smell and be proud of something they have imagined and created with their own hands, and have fun at the same time, instead of spending too much time in front of a screen. Although I also think there are many children's movies that are very educational and important for the growth of a child, as they were for me, as well as certain interactive games that stimulate reasoning and many other qualities. I think the most important thing is to find the right balance according to the age, interests, and needs of the children.
As I am an actress and have also taught musical theatre to children, I also enjoy doing more physical activities and games that stimulate the capacity for attention and concentration, action and reaction, improvisation, imagination, creativity, and even interpretation and representation, acting skills, the different behaviors, creative writing, etc. To show some plays, from the most classical to the most current and contemporary ones, of different styles, musicals, and to show a little of the world of visual arts, stage, and performing arts. To encourage freedom of expression, thought, and creation.
As I am Portuguese, my native language is Portuguese, I speak English and I have also had Spanish lessons, I understand everything and speak a little Spanish. I know what it is to live in a different country, speak a different language, know different cultures, and I respect all of them. In Portugal, we are encouraged from an early age to learn more than one language, to know how to speak another language in addition to our native language. I feel that in England in general people have more difficulties in understanding and speaking other languages because they have not been used to it since they were young, which is normal because the English language is the universal language, but I think it is important to extend our knowledge and skills, and many times this starts with knowing other languages and cultures, this will only enrich us in all aspects and can be very useful. I would be very happy to teach a little of what I know, and I know that I will also learn a lot with each family, child, and experience.
I think these are my main characteristics, but as I do musical theatre I am also very connected to music, I have already had piano lessons and I also sing, I love to sing and teach songs to children so we can sing together, and I love to play their favorite characters and sing to them songs like Disney songs, for example, I am a big fan of Disney and I love cartoons. I love reading and writing too. I love reading stories to children and interpreting different voices to demonstrate the different characters, actions, and situations, and encourage them to read too.
I also love nature and exploring outdoor spaces like parks where you can breathe fresh air, where there is lots of space to run and play and be in direct contact with nature. I also really like animals and pets.
I also think it is very important to exercise, not to have a sedentary life, I encourage children to play team sports as well as individual exercises, I think it is very important to move and have a healthy life. And related to healthy living, I also like to cook. I like to make all kinds of recipes, savory and sweet, but always the most healthy possible and very tasty as my mother always used to cook for me and teach me since I was a little girl. Having a balanced diet, with the necessary good foods, I think is very important for the health and good growth and development of a child and person of any age. A good diet determines a lot the lifestyle of each one, the development, the benefit in everything you do. I like to encourage the child to cook with me, safely and carefully, of course, to know how it is done and to know new foods and make very tasty recipes in a healthy way.
I am tidy and clean, I am very careful about it, and I always leave spaces as I found or better. And I think it's important to teach and encourage children to tidy up after themselves, to play freely but to always have the concern and care to tidy up after, to be careful with things and be organized.
In short, I will try to share all the knowledge I have in the best possible way, always bearing in mind what is best for the child, and try to help as much as I can within my knowledge and abilities.
