My Summary
About Me
Hello! My name is Gemma. I am a friendly, approachable and kind childcare provider with a decade of experience in working with children and young people from 0-5. I'm flexible to your needs and am happy to work a variation of days and times.
My Experience
My journey in childcare began age 14, babysitting for neighbours back in Glasgow. I worked as a Mother's Help for a mother with four children (including a newborn) for a good while alongside secondary school, as well as working as an evening babysitter.
After I left school, I moved to Portugal where I worked as an au pair for 6-months, taking care of a 6 year old and a 3 year old. They were a home educating family, so I supported their education and childcare.
Once I got back to Scotland, I studied Child Development whilst working as a full-time nanny, working flexible shifts for an NHS nurse, and taking care of her 1-year-old son. I juggled this with working as an afterschool nanny-share for two 8 year olds, and a part time nanny for a 4 year old preschooler. I left the child development world for a while, and for about a year before the pandemic and throughout, I worked with disabled & vulnerable young people in youth arts settings. Although this was a brilliant role, I really missed working with under 8's and families.
And so I began to look for ways back into the world of families, and began working as a support worker at a mother-and-baby-unit. This has quite easily been the most satisfying role of my career, with having the absolute honour of working with four mothers at a time, and their very young babies, supporting them to live healthy, happy lives. I currently juggle this role alongside a busy and active home life with my wife and four animals. I also have a Conditional for Midwifery in September, which I am very excited about!
I have a real keen interest in child development. Much of my interests focus on the amazing positives of outdoor play and education for children and young people, as well as Respectful Childcare, RIE, Montessori and Waldorf. I firmly believe that children should be treated as their own people with full autonomy, and the right to learn in a child-led play - facilitated by adults where required.
As a childcare provider, I am fun, empathetic, kind and caring, with a real love of getting kids outdoors and making life exciting!
