My Experience

St Maries catholic primary school
I volunteered at St Maries school for two weeks.The role involved assisting Year 2’s with their numeracy and literacy skills as well the other tasks they had to complete during the day.During my time at the school I learned some transferable skills.Punctuality was crucial to ensure I was on time for all the different class. activities.Additionally arriving before the class sessions also allowed me to organise myself and prepare myself before I could assist the children in their learning, also the teachers could then handover any important information or tasks I needed to do before the class activities started.This relates to the job role I am applying for as not arriving on time can put a burden on the available staff as the might not be able to cope with the work load.As a result this potentially put the service users health at risk .Another important skill I learnt was communication; adapting my language to a level the children could understand was very important for them to understand the content they were learning.This is applies to the position I'm applying for as I will have to adapt my language as to suit the different communication needs.

St marie's cathedral coffee bar volunteer
As a fully dedicated catholic ,on most Sundays after the church service I go and help out with the refreshments.This involves serving teas and coffees to the parishioners.The coffee bar get very busy after the service and one of the skills I learnt from volunteering was working in busy condition and the importance of working in a team .I worked in a team of three.To keep on top of everything we split the tasks and we checked with each other to see if everyone was managing.Team working is vital in healthcare in order to ensure all the individual service users needs are met.One person cannot successful meet all the need of the service user but if tasks are allocated this ensures all needs are met properly and in a timely manner.

Lodge moor nursery & The old school house nursery
Volunteering for both nurseries was a very new experience for me as I had never worked in any early year settings before.I shadowed Early years' practitioners from two nurseries.Both nurseries operated on a person centred approach.Each child was given care that was personalised to them.This was very important because it was important that I am each individual is different during my role and in order for good quality care to be given it’s important to respect the diversity in people and it important that the care given is tailored to the needs and condition of service users.

Burton street foundation
At Burton street foundation I volunteered for a day.I was working with teenagers that had down syndrome.The group comprised people with physical and mental disability. A lot of the individuals at the centre had a lot of challenging behaviours.It was important that I adopted good communication skills especially when it came to de-escalating a situation were a service user would have been frustrated.Communicating in a calm and reassuring way and ensuring that my body language was not intimidating and confrontational proved to be successful when the service users were agitated.I also found that my body language also played a role in this.

Northern general brearley coffee bar volunteer
I also worked in a coffee shop within the hospital serving tea and coffee to patients and the public. The role involved managing the stock, selling products and cleaning of the workplace.At the end of my shift I was required to empty the till and do a financial check.I gained analytical and numeracy skills .It was important I did this to ensure the correct amount of money has been collected from customers.

Tapton edge residential care home
My first care job was in Tapton edge care home. The role involved looking after the elderly and assisting them with their day to day living.Most of the residents suffered with dementia at different stages as a result its important that care given was tailored to the needs of each individual .Some of the duties included assisting with meal times ,personal care and other daily activities.Working as a care assistant taught me the importance of empathy.A lot of the services users had a wide range of differentiating needs and it was important as care assistants we took time listen to the services users needs and also to be patient especially during moments that the service user was upset,agitated or during meal time when the service user was refusing to eat and we would have to sit and encourage them.The more we were empathetic to service users ;they would feel cared for and protected especially for new residents.A lot of the new resident would feel very anxious and unsettled especially being in a new environment but when showed empathy they would begin to settle in and calm down,

Elmsdene night care assistant
I also worked as night care assistant in a care home that provides a service for residents with dementia.With the experience I had acquired from my previous job at Tapton .I was able to use and learn more.One of the skills I developed was the importance of observation skills.It was important to have good observation skill in order to identify any changes in the residents health condition.This is essential is it allows professionals to be able to adjust the care according to the needs of the service user.

Fusco Browne healthcare
In the recent past I was working for Fusco Browne as a domiciliary senior carer.In the role I was expected to provide personal care ,ordering and collecting medication.I was also expected to administer medication using the MAR charts.Additionally we also had some clients that were had PEG tubes attached to their stomach as a result I had to be PEG trained and I was expected to administer PEG feeds and as well as the medication through the feeding tube.Daily cleaning and making sure service user home were clean was also part of my duties.I was also required to do grocery shopping once a week for each service user.Other roles included assisting clients on day outs and being able to communicate to the GP,district nurse and ambulance team the appropriate concerns .Lone working in services users homes has allowed me to grow professionally and in my personal life.I’ve learned to be more organised and manage my time efficiently as I did not have direct supervision from managers however they were always a phone call away when I needed their help.I also gained the ability to be able to take the initiative to solve arising problems quickly.An example knowing the appropriate professional to refer the service user to due to changing health conditions,deciding which tasks to tackle first and knowing how to act and react in an emergency.

Haythorne place care home
Currently I’m working as a care assistant looking after vulnerable adults ranging from the age of 18 and onwards.The services users I look after have a range of different conditions including alcoholism,mental health conditions and many more.It was important that all the care and actions I took when caring for the individuals was in line with the policies and procedure.Accountability allowed me to learn from my mistakes and provide better quality care.

Through the work and volunteering experience I have gained.I believe I have acquired a lot of skills and qualities that will make me a useful candidate for this role.I also believe that this role will help me gain more experience to make me grow and develop in my professional life.Additionally with my passion for caring I believe if I am considered for this role I am willing to learn and take on any new challenges that will be presented to me.
