My Summary
About Me
I'm from a small town in Dumfries and Galloway, and moved here to study. I am in third year at the University of Aberdeen studying politics and international relations, with electives in geography, history and anthropology. I am a highly motivated student, and can easily maintain a healthy work-life balance with my strong organisation skills. In my spare time I enjoy walking, camping and reading. I regularly go rock climbing and hiking with friends. I also enjoy traveling, and have visited around 25 countries across Europe, North American and Asia. For years I have volunteered for environmental conservation programs, at home and in Aberdeen. Working with local people, activists and scientists to carry out research, install infrastructure and advice policy makers. I am friendly and understanding, and can quickly adapt to new environments and overcome new challenges. I enjoy meeting new people and trying new things, and I am dedicated to helping others in whatever way I can. I am looking for some further experience working with young people as I hope to go into a job focusing on educational programs engaging the youth in important issues, and I am hoping to support myself during my studies here in Aberdeen.
My Experience
I have regularly been a babysitter for kids of friends, family and teachers at my high school for years, from weeknights to weekends and helping on day trips. I have been a Scout Leader for four years, which has involved training to organise and work with young people as well as lead activities and ensure safety is maintained. I work with children aged 6-8 on a weekly basis, but have also helped at Scout events with the age ranging up to 14. With the Scouts, we run a wide range of activities, from games to educational workshops, to encouraging the kids to get creative and getting outside. Through my other volunteer work, I have assisted on projects focusing on environmental and outdoor education, in which I have worked with primary and secondary school students to learn about nature, engage with the outdoors and understand why conservation is important. During my time traveling, I have volunteered on educational projects with young people too. In India I helped as a classroom assistant for high school children. In Vietnam, I organised and taught English for various classes, the youngest ageing 4-6 up to classes for students. Outside my experiences working with children, I have worked both retail and hospitality jobs. I have worked in a cafe preparing food and drinks and serving customers, and in an outdoor clothing shop organising stock and recommending products to customers based on their needs. I have also worked in a wholesaler and supermarket packing orders, which has involved starting at 3am or working until 11pm. Overall, I am highly experienced at working with children and ensuring to engage them in a range of fun and educational activities, as well as being aware of safety. I genuinely enjoy working with young people, and helping them fulfil their potential. I am well organised, I can follow instructions and learn quickly, as well as solve problems and take on the role as a team leader. I am good at communicating and reliable.
My Qualifications
I have two PVGs through my role as a Scout Leader and volunteer on a conservation project. I am trained as a Scout Leader, which involves safety, first aid, and understanding how to work with young people. I can assist in homework also and especially for humanities subjects, having studied geography, politics and history at university and a range of others at high schools for which I received high grades.
My Availability
As a student, my classes only take up a few hours during the mornings and afternoon during the week. I am free every late afternoon and evening, aside from Mondays as that is when I volunteer at Scouts as a leader. I am free all weekend and late nights, and I can do overnight depending on the day though at the weekend is better. I am open to discussion to do earlier times, like before schools and in the mornings. It depends on my university schedule so please do enquire what times you would like. I have a bus pass and live in a central part of the city, so I can travel easily to anywhere in or close to Aberdeen with ease.
