About Me
Hi! I'm Sophie and I am 20 years old from a small village in Somerset. I am in my final year at the University of Sussex studying Sociology. After I graduate this Summer I hope to have secured a place on a graduate teaching scheme in Brighton.
I have spent the last four years in hospitality working in fine dining. I worked at The Newt in Somerset as a waitress (2019-2023), and then I had a job over the summer as a runner at The Ivy Asia, where I was named employee of the month!
SKILLS
? Excellent communication skills both spoken and written.
? My independent school education was Monday – Saturday with lessons finishing at 5pm with the option to stay later to do homework till 9 which I often did as my mum taught at the school. Making me resilient as well as being used to long hours of hard work.
? My experience working in hospitality has taught me how to cope with the public and deal with difficult situations to resolve in a professional manner to the satisfaction of all.
? I am friendly, very approachable and with strong empathetic skills.
? Working with the public and meeting new people constantly has taught me how to tailor my skills to different situations and to make strong relationships with colleagues and superiors.
ACTIVITIES
I have grown up playing hockey in the position of goalkeeper for the school's 1stXI team and the university's 2ndXII team where we won our league. When I was 15 I was selected for preseason and recommended for trials for Somerset and Avon Hockey team, however this was not possible due to my change in schools. Playing sports my whole life means that my teamwork skills are well developed as well as my people skills as I have had to train with many different individuals as teams change and people move on.
During my GCSE years I also completed my Silver DofE and was part of the Combined Cadet Forces for two years. In this, I volunteered to go to CCF Summer Camp where I mixed with pupils from other schools and learned leadership and teamwork skills.
I also often volunteered myself to organise school socials for my peers where I’d have to create a menu, a theme, and activities which allowed me to put my organisation skills to use as well as problem solving skills.
My Experience
Growing up in a small village which was majoritively old people there was little opportunity to babysit. I have always enjoyed spending time with children having younger cousins who are around 10 years younger than myself who we saw often in Devon. I have always been friendly with other students in younger years where I became a Pre-Prep monitor, and at my secondary school I am still in contact with many of the students, who are now in sixth form! Also in secondary school I took part in going to the local care home to look talk with the old people as well as taking part in a buddying programme with one of the local primary schools.
I have decided to chose nannying as a part time job for myself instead of hospitality or retail as I have realised that it is possible to do a job where you are doing the actitivties that you most enjoy. From doing nannying I hope to gain experience working with children before I become a teacher.
