About Me
Hi, I'm Francesca (nicknamed Cheki), and I'm keen to find out how I can help with your childcare needs.
I'm a central Cambridge mum with kids aged 8 and 11, shifting into the childcare sector from a professional background. As my kids are more independent now and my partner works for himself, I'm able to offer part-time, occasional or emergency help in your home or out and about with kids. I feel passionately that there's nothing more important than caring for little people and supporting their parents; I particularly enjoy spending time with preschoolers, but am happy to work with kids of any age.
I love nature, animals, new adventures, and the magic of discovery that comes with spending time with children. My approach to childcare is connection-based and trauma-informed. I believe in teaching children self-regulation and emotional intelligence through modelling; I'm trained in nonviolent communication and believe strongly in respecting kids' reality. I continually marvel at children's ability to work things out when they have a caring adult on hand. There's suspected neurodivergence in my household so I am happy to work with kids with a range of extra needs, and am attuned to sensory processing issues. I've traveled widely and enjoy meeting people from different cultures; having been both vegetarian and gluten-free I am sensitive to the needs of your family and happy to fit in.
My Experience
I'm currently volunteering at my kids' school (St Matthew's), and am due to undertake the council's Forest School training in September, when I'll also start volunteering at St Matthew's the after-school provision. In the past I've led activities for children and families at the Cambridge Buddhist Centre and at Buddhafield East summer camp. In my 20s I also worked as a private tutor in English and Latin, and taught English in China and Italy.
In previous jobs I've worked as a volunteer coordinator at the Cambridge Women's Resources Centre (supporting women at risk of offending) and at an Age Concern branch in London (with school kids visiting older people). These experiences have brought me into contact with a wide variety of people from all walks of life who needed support, whether with housing, illness, social support, mental health issues, etc. I feel privileged to be able to glimpse inside people's lives and offer practical help and caring acknowledgement of their challenges. In these roles I also underwent training on safeguarding, oversaw DBS checks for volunteers, and managed various situations involving vulnerable people.
My other roles have involved working in climate action, sustainability, community engagement in the arts, and academic editing and research.
