Saltersgate primary
I was incredibly lucky to be given the opportunity to work at a local primary school for children with learning disabilities. I found the job incredibly enjoyable and I felt so welcome from the moment I arrived. During the placement I learnt how to communicate with children with a diversity of needs. I worked with children that had behavioural problems, autism, speech defects and physical needs. Each child had different abilities, so I was able to practice non-verbal communication and simplifying information to fit each child’s ability and understanding. I spent time understanding the specific conditions and this was the key to me being able to provide good care and make connections. Although it was such a great experience, it was also very challenging and demanding but the reward and the pride I felt outweighed anything else. As I got more involved in my role at work I began to understand more deeply the function of kids and how each learning disabilities has different effects.
Teaching assistant volunteer
During my work experience at a local primary, I took on the role of classroom assistant where I assisted the children and their teacher. I set up tasks such as drawing, writing and numeracy work for the children to stimulate them and get them interacting with one another and myself. Seeing the children spelling their names and me helping them gave me a great sense of pride as I helped them discover new things in this world. During breaks and lunch times I supervised the children in outdoor play and joined in on their skipping and some fun activities to encourage them all to work together. This opportunity gave me the chance to get to know the children and staff and made my love for

working with children grow. Some children I worked with found reading very challenging so I took time out of the classroom activities and spent time with them, this brought me to the realisation of how challenging working with children can be as all children have different abilities. The most challenging part of my time at the primary school was trying to get children to listen as they just kept getting distracted, it took some time but eventually I got through to them and they were all happy that I was willing to spend time playing and helping them with the tasks. During this experience I feel my love and understanding for working with children grew and I’d love to take on more opportunities.
Babysitting
Although I haven’t professionally worked as a babysitter I have over the past few years dedicated my spare time to looking after children for family and friends and my love for this grew. Therefore I am looking to help families in need of extra support to relieve some stress and help to create a safe, happy and loving environment for children. I also want to be able to create a trusting relationship with the families so that they feel comfortable with me around.
