About Me
Hello, my name's Joanna Palmer,
I've lived in Cambridge most of my life & moved to Great Shelford about 12 years ago. I am committed to providing a high quality service at Shelford childcare, childminding service for local families in and around the Great Shelford & Surrounding areas. Registered with Ofsted. My Last inspection grade 'Outstanding '.
I hold a BA Early Years Honours degree and have studied and completed numerous courses, qualifications and workshops to better support young children's development and learning, including research with Cambridge university faculty of education. I am trained as a Senco and in child protection as well as being a trainer for the childcare sector.
Mother to 3 boys (now grown).
I work with a co childminder (CACHE NVQ Children's care learning & development Level 3) her first inspection was May 22 (graded Good) and my grading was Outstanding; we have assistants and cover staff so we are able to offer a high level of individual attention to each child. One has their level 3 Diploma, One has recently completed Level 3 with distinctions, and one assistant is undergoing level 3 training the others are qualified primary teachers. We all hold paediatric first Aid and have DBS clearance. All staff undergo professional development training regularly to keep updated on current best practice including Safeguarding.
I have an enclosed rear garden area for encouraging outdoor play as well as a front garden which we sometimes use and a little green in front of the setting. We have an outdoor childminding room for all year round use and extra space with lighting, heating and air con along with a large play shed for use on wetter/colder days when the children play outside. We visit the local parks, and nature spots frequently. We go for walks locally such as to the allotments or to pick blackberries or see the wildlife or watch the trains pass by.
We offer funded places to 9mths (from Sept 24) to 4 year olds' as well as full day care. We can do a term time only contract where a half fee retainer is charged for school holidays. We do hold a wait list for future places however at present this is very heavily subscribed.
We also provide nutritious food and snacks and all staff have completed food hygiene training. (Hot home cooked fresh midday meals)
Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
My Experience
Obviously being mother to 3 boys, although they are adults now, gave me a solid grounding. However I also have 35+ years experience including childminding. I am early years honours degree qualified, plus many years as an early years course tutor and as a support officer for home based child carers, helping individual settings develop quality and practice. I've also worked in and for several children's centres as well as in a nursery chain as deputy and quality development manager.

My 2 boys both attend Joanna's childcare - the oldest actually just started school today after 3.5 years with Joanna, and the youngest has been attending Joanna since he was 5 months old (now 1.5). They LOVE going there. My son used to ask whether he could also go on weekends and was really disappointed every time I told him no Joanna isn't open at the weekends.
I can't praise her and her staff enough. They are genuinely caring, provide a safe and friendly setting with loads of activities and trips, give regular reports and updates to me on their progress. Every activity is both fun, but also educational and teaches the kids a new skill or practices something they were already taught. The snacks and meals are homecooked and healthy (and I'm quite jealous I can't stay for lunch actually!)
I've seen my boys flourish under Joanna's daily supervision - I would highly recommend her to other parents looking for a top quality childminder.
